Steve has broad business, political, and government experience, both as a legislator and executive staff member on Capitol Hill in Nashville. The former Republican state representative was re-elected three times to represent Knoxville's 18th State House District. Steve served on the Transportation, Consumer and Employee Affairs, and Public Transportation Committees. In 2004, TNCO named him Legislator of the Year, and as a member of the TN General Assembly he also served as Secretary of the Republican Caucus. Buttry served as special assistant to the commissioner while at the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Steve worked with Connected Tennessee as a project manager to help make broadband service available across 33 East Tennessee counties. He also worked in healthcare for Pfizer. Steve co-founded First Response of Tennessee.
Steve, born in Sneedville, received his bachelor's degree in political science from East Tennessee State University. He and his wife, Cindy, have one son, Zach, and live in Knoxville.
